Our History
In the Beginning
Founded in 1967 by brothers, Frank and John Wagner, and cousin, Ed Redding, the company began humbly, operating primarily out of pick-ups and homes. With just a handful of employees, the company performed commercial and private asphalt paving in north central Iowa.
1970’s
By 1970, Blacktop Service acquired a small chip seal company and began chip sealing. The same year, we purchased our first asphalt plant located near Algona, Iowa. In 1971, property was purchased in Humboldt and a shop and office was built, establishing a home base for the company. By 1976, the company purchased Northwest Limestone, an existing quarry in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and expanded into limestone crushing, wet sand dredging and redi-mix concrete.
1980’s
A second asphalt plant was acquired in 1985 in Humboldt, Iowa, along with an expansion to Phoenix, Arizona. The company continued to experience growth and increased volumes but recognized greater potential in the asphalt market.
1990’s
In 1990, the redi-mix operations were divested and Blacktop Service Company began focusing solely on asphalt related operations. By 1995, a third asphalt plant was purchased and placed in southern Iowa. Three years later, the original Algona plant was deconstructed and replaced with a larger asphalt plant in Whittemore, Iowa.
2000’s
In 2001, a fourth asphalt plant was purchased and placed in Aurelia, Iowa. A fifth asphalt plant, in Allison, Iowa, was purchased in 2008. The next year the Arizona operations were closed and all resources were relocated to Iowa. Shortly thereafter, Blacktop Service Company acquired Steffes Construction, a chip seal company in eastern Iowa, to expand the company’s chip seal operations.
2010’s
During the 2010’s, Blacktop Service Company continued to operate five asphalt plants and serve its markets and customers. In 2017, the company celebrated its 50-year anniversary. By 2019, Blacktop Service expanded its footprint with a sixth plant located in Fostoria, Iowa. With this plant, the company added another paving crew enabling a greater presence in Northwest Iowa.
Into the Future
Blacktop Service now works statewide performing asphalt paving, chip sealing, milling, crack filling and base work. The company employs over 80 people and continues to be owned and operated by the Wagner family.
